Spanish I

Course Type: Core                   Course Length: Full year                      Credits: 5.00

The main objective of this course is to develop basic communicative skills in Spanish as a second language and to develop a broad knowledge of the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries and cities. Our goals will be accomplished by having a positive attitude and hard work.

 

The student will be able to describe the world that surrounds them in the present tense, compare and contrast, talk about events in present and planned future events, and give commands.

Speaking:  Students are encouraged to use Spanish at all the time when speaking in the classroom.

Listening: The majority of this course will be taught in Spanish. Students will be responsible and advocate; if you do not understand (you should raise hands and ask) Please do not disrupt the class talking, if I, Mrs. Wylde  is going too fast, student will request repetition (Repita, por favor) or a slower pace (Más despacio, por favor). Aside from pronunciation practice, you should not be talking to your peers.

Writing: Student will demonstrate mastery of material and individual point of view. Student will use wordreference.com or a dictionary of their choosing to best express the desired message efficiently and accurately.

 

Spanish II

Course Type: Core                   Course Length: Full year                      Credits: 5.00

The main objective of this course is to keep developing communicative skills in Spanish and to  understand the similarities and differences between cultures and languages and to examine the influence of the beliefs and values on the target culture(s).

 

Spanish III

Course Type: Core                   Course Length: Full year                      Credits: 5.00

In Spanish III, students continue to develop their communicative competence by interacting orally and in writing with other Spanish speakers, understand oral and written messages in Spanish and making oral and written presentations in Spanish. They communicate on a variety of topics at a level commensurate with their study, using more complex structures in Spanish and moving from concrete to more abstract concepts. They comprehend the main ideas of the authentic materials that they listen to and read and are able to identify significant details when the topics are familiar. Students develop the ability to discuss in Spanish topics related to historical and contemporary events and issues.

 

Spanish IV

Course Type: Core                   Course Length: Full year                      Credits: 5.00

Students enrolling in this course should have already completed extensive studies in vocabulary acquisition and grammar. Intermediate level skills in speaking, writing, reading, and understanding spoken Spanish are expected. Students will communicate and talk casually about topics of current public and personal interest, as well as discuss literacy texts. This course will enhance student preparation for AP Spanish V and will help prepare students for the AP Exam. Recommendation: A grade of “B+” or above in Spanish III or native speaker status.

 

AP Spanish

Course Type: Elective              Course Length: Full year                      Credits: 5.00

The AP Spanish Language course is comparable to an advanced level (5th- and 6th-semester or the equivalent) college Spanish language course. Emphasizing the use of Spanish for active communication, it encompasses aural/oral skills, reading comprehension, grammar, and composition.

In this course, special emphasis is placed on the use of authentic source materials and the integration of language skills. Therefore, you should receive extensive training in combining listening, reading, and speaking (or listening, reading, and writing) skills in order to demonstrate understanding of authentic Spanish-language source materials.

 

French I

Course Type: Core                   Course Length: Full year                      Credits: 5.00

Students will be able to learn the basics of the French language: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Participation is essential to learning a second language.

 

French II

Course Type: Core                   Course Length: Full year                      Credits: 5.00

The main objective of this course is to keep developing communicative skills in French and to understand the similarities and differences between cultures and languages and to examine the influence of the beliefs and values on the target culture(s).
